HOW MONTANA APPEALS WORK
THE SHORT VERSION

Montana gives you 30 days from the appraisal notice to seek DOR review or appeal to the county tax appeal board.

WHEN AN APPEAL MAKES SENSE
  • Market evidence shows the DOR value is too high.
  • The classification or property record is wrong.
WHEN IT USUALLY WILL NOT
  • The complaint is only about the tax bill.
  • You miss the notice-based 30-day window.

Read the full explanation

Montana's Department of Revenue determines property classification and market value. Within 30 days of the date on the classification and appraisal notice, an owner may request an informal review from the department, appeal directly to the county tax appeal board, or do both. A further appeal from the county board goes to the Montana Tax Appeal Board within 30 days. This is general information, not tax advice.
