HOW INDIANA APPEALS WORK
THE SHORT VERSION

Indiana sets your assessed value each year, and you appeal by filing Form 130 with your county assessor. The deadline is June 15 when your Form 11 notice is mailed before May 1, otherwise 45 days from the notice. An appeal helps when your value is above what your home would sell for.

WHEN AN APPEAL MAKES SENSE
  • Your assessed value is above what your home would sell for.
  • The record has an error in your home’s size, condition, grade, or features.
  • You file Form 130 by June 15 (when the Form 11 notice is mailed before May 1) or within 45 days of the notice.
WHEN IT USUALLY WILL NOT
  • Your bill went up but your assessed value is fair. A higher bill often comes from the tax rate, not the value.
  • You have no market evidence. The appeal reviews your value, not the size of your bill.

In Indiana, your county assessor sets your home’s assessed value each year, and you appeal by filing Form 130 with the county assessor. If your assessment notice (Form 11) is mailed before May 1, your deadline is June 15; otherwise you have 45 days from the notice. If the county board denies you, you can appeal to the Indiana Board of Tax Review. An appeal helps when your assessed value is above what your home would sell for, or the record has an error. It usually will not help just because your bill went up. This is general information, not tax advice.
